Notranjska museum Postojna was founded in 1947. It is complex museum and consists of 5 departments: historical, archaeological, biological, ethnological and the conservation restoration workshop. The museum manages the regional cultural and natural heritage. It preserves and presents movable objects and art crafts of the cultural heritage relating to Postojna, Inner-Karst (Notranjska) Region and the wider karst area.
The exhibition Karst museum combines the presentation of the physical karst and human life in the karst, from the earliest settlements to the development of cave tourism and caving, as well as special adjustments that were dictated by the stony karst landscape, which are today, among other things, reflected in the remarkable architecture. The exhibition presents all the karst phenomena and explains their formation. A karst landscape can appear only where there are water-soluble rocks like limestone and dolomite. This area started to evolve 100 million years ago in shallow coral seas, which is evident by fossils of shellfish, snails and fish. When it rose from the sea 50 million years ago, karst phenomena began to appear on the surface.
With the Karst Museum exhibition we have become the first museum on karst in Slovenia and Europe.
